If you were told to go to the South Mountain Justice Court after a misdemeanor or DUI citation then it means that you were arrested by DPS or someone from the  Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). If you were arrested by an officer of the city, then you should be told to go to city court.

The jurisdictional boundaries for this court are as follows: Sky Harbor Blvd to the north, Chandler to the south, 48th Street to the east and Carver Road to the west. The actual boundaries of the court are represented on a map. They do not form a perfect rectangle, but instead, they jump all over the place. That is why it is important to contact DM Cantor. If you weren’t, then you have a jurisdictional defense, and this means that you could have the entire case thrown out.

The South Mountain Justice Court is located at the Downtown Justice Center which is at 620 West Jackson in Phoenix, Arizona. This is Jackson St and 7th Avenue. There are multiple courts in the same building, but you will look for the South Mountain Justice Center court room. There is a parking garage or multiple parking spaces in the front of the building. Make sure you dress appropriately which means no baseball hats, sunglasses, shorts or tank tops.

The judge in the South Mountain Justice Court is Rebecca Rios. Rebecca Rios, the South Mountain Justice of the Peace, brings a strong background in public service to the role. With a family history of military service and political engagement, including her father’s tenure as the first Latino President of the Arizona State Senate, Judge Rios has served as a social worker and held various positions in the Arizona legislature, including Minority Leader. She is continuing her public service in her position as Justice of the Peace in South Mountain. A JP doesn’t have to go to law school, and they don’t even have to be an attorney.
