In Maricopa County, if you have a criminal traffic matter in which you were stopped by either DPS or the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, you will be appearing in one of the 24 Justice Courts in Maricopa County. The Justice Courts are run by a Justice of the Peace, who is an elected official. In Maricopa County, the Justice of the Peace does not have to be a lawyer, and in fact most of them are not lawyers. In the Justice Courts, the Justice of the Peace is the presiding Judge.
